Off course you can! You can appoint Godparents/ Guideparents/ Supporting adults, mentors, honorary aunts and uncles to your child and you can ask them to make commitments during the ceremony.
Unlike a Christening, at a Naming Ceremony there are no restrictions and no prerequisites that your Godparents/ Guideparents/ Supporting adults, mentors, honorary aunts and uncles need to fulfil. That means you can choose anyone who holds a special place in both yours and your child’s life, and you can involve them as much or as little as you wish in the ceremony itself.
Promises may be made by Godparents/ Guideparents/ Supporting adults, mentors, honorary aunts and uncles, but also can be made by the parents, or even other members of the invited guests. People involved can either answer questions asked by the celebrant during the ceremony, or they can prepare their own commitments. I’ve seen some Godparents/ Guideparents/ Supporting adults, mentors, honorary aunts and uncles, write their own commitments to the child, these are very personable, usually based on the Godparents/ Guideparents/ Supporting adults, mentors, honorary aunts and uncles, qualities and skills and can be surprising to the parents.
There are no restrictions to whom you choose to be a Godparents/ Guideparents/ Supporting adults, mentors, honorary aunts and uncles. It is best to choose someone who you feel is best suited to be a role model to your child as they grow up, most of all you will want someone to have a positive influence on your child’s life.
